Ramadan and
Real Happiness
Ramadan is the month of rich spiritual experience
and tremendous blessings that bring so much joy
and happiness to Muslim families around the world.
One may wonder why Muslims love Ramadan so
much when it is a month in which they deprive
themselves of their physical desires? What is the
Imam Aly M. Lela
secret behind the joy they find in sharing their food
with others, spending their money generously in
charities, and standing in long late-night prayers?
Why do needy Muslims (who are familiar with
hunger and deprivation) find joy in Ramadan?
The answer to these questions lies in the fact that
Ramadan provides Muslims with a greatly rich
spiritual experience, which cannot be found
elsewhere. One can clearly observe the connection
between such rich spirituality and the happiness
experienced in Ramadan, which indicates that the
source of happiness is not necessary the external
physical pleasures, rather, authentic happiness
which comes from within. It comes from making
wise choices, including choosing to align our
activities with the guidance of Allah and fulfill our
duties of our Lord and creator by serving Him and
serving His creatures. The nearer we get to Allah
SWT, the happier we are and vice versa,
"Whoever follows My guidance will neither go
astray nor su er. And whoever turns away from My
remembrance, indeed, he will have a depressing
life."
